When is brake noise signaling a problem?
Sometimes, your vehicles brakes will alert you when there is trouble. Whistling noises, squealing sounds or grinding are indications that maintenance is required.
Typically brake pads should be replaced when the lining has worn to 3mm thickness or if the lining has become cracked or tapered.
Tapered is defined as the lining being thicker at one end of the pad than the other.
Common Brake Systems Problems
- Worn brake pads.
- Heat cracked or worn "untrue" rotors.
- Uneven finish on rotors.
- Loose fitting brake pads in the caliper.
- Lack of silicone compound on brake components.
- Missing springs of anti-rattle clips that should be on the caliper or pad.
- Improper tightening sequence of lug nuts or caliper hardware.
Brake System Warning Signs
- Squealing or grinding when braking.
- Vibration or pulsation when braking at high speed.
- Pull to left of right while braking.
- Soft or spongy brake pedal.
- Parking brake does not hold properly.
- Brake fluid leaks.
Our Brake Service

Brake Components
Click on the image on the right for an expanded view of common
brake system components. You can see the brake rotor, brake
caliper and brake pads inside of the caliper.
When we inspect your brake system we will measure the thickness of your brake pads and rotors. Typically brake pads will need to be replace when their thickness is down to 3mm to 4mm. Brake rotors have specific minimum thickness that is unique to each rotor. That thickness is stamped on the rotor.
Whenever your brakes are evaluated you should ask for the specific measurements of your components so you can keep track of your brake systems wear.
